I currently own a restored 1972 Subaru GSR coupe, the engine has been reconditioned retaining the standard stage one cam. Ive seen the EA performence page and it is very useful, but if anyone has hands on info and performence tips about the EA63 engine in my car, could you please write.

EA63 is standard 1361cc, but ive bored it out to 1425cc.

I wonder if you could stuff an EA71 in there? They are pretty small - smaller than the EA81. Parts would be more readily availible for it too. Just a thought. Don't know if it would bolt up to te tranny or not tho. Bet that little car would fly with 1600cc in it!

actually.. my car has more horsepower standard than the 1600's do, i think they were 67hp the gsr were 69hp. The EA71 does fit in but the gearbox needs a few millimetres taken off the bellhousing. Ive been thinking of dropping a 1600 5 speed box in which will mean ill need to change a few g/box mounts but other than that should be alright. Im also trying to find a set of twin weber carbs...

The '84 and later EA71 engines had 69hp. They had larger valves than the earlier ones. If you're looking for performance, that's the route I'd take. The EA71 has a closed deck block that should handle more power than your EA63 with wet cylinders. Also, dual carb intake manifolds aren't too hard to find for EA71s.

 

There used to be a guy here named Marnix (from Germany or Holland?) who raced a Loyale style car with an EA71 in it. He had a better cam and some other mods. I'm a big fan of those late EA71 engines.

 

In order for you to use one of these late EA71 engines, you'd have to either use an EA81 tranny, or use the engine bellhousing from an earlier EA71. I'd suggest using an EA81 tranny so that you can use the larger clutch/flywheel. (but lighten the flywheel)

 

PPP...PLEASE post pictures of your car!! I've only ever seen pics of a plastic model of this car, and just from that it is one of my favorite Subarus.

Oh man thats a cool car, it should be left as original as you can stand to. The original motor sounds pretty punchy for what it is and its a classic already.

One more vote for staying original.This is a well sought after car by a few of us.

 

You don't throw a Floyd Rose whammy bar on a 50's Stratocaster.Or a Warmouth neck on an old Gibson,etc,etc,etc.

 

If you want the same body and have some fun with it go get a 70's Stage I coupe.I just had to let one go but still retain much of the bolt on parts.If you find a nice hull I can help you with EA71's,etc,etc as can a lot of folks out west.

WOW! Thanks for all your advice and replys. I live in New Zealand and as far as i know, i am the only one over here who owns a 1972 GSR, i also own a 1974 GSR which is one of five in the country. Sorry moosens but this car is NEVER gona be sold, its staying in the family for as long as it survives.:D . I'd love to drop an EA71 in, but would i need to adapt the EA81 tranny to fit? and if i drop the EA81 tranny in would i need to change my whole front suspension set up, axles etc? the car itself is mostly original, apart from mags, paint and the exhaust system, ive run twin 2inch piping, would you say these are too large? am i losing too much back pressure?

I'm pretty sure that an EA71 will bolt up to your existing transmission. Later model EA71 engines ('84 and later) used the EA81 transmissions, but you can put an earlier ('78-'83?) bellhousing on a later engine to adapt it to the old style transmission. I'm guessing that you may not have enough room for an EA81 or a 5spd transmission.

cheers guys! pictures are not far away but i need a digital camera or a scanner... i have neither, i will find a friend to get some pictures on here for you guys. does anyone know if fujiheavy industries would still hold original body shells, my cousin bought a brand new mazda rx3 shell, i was wondering if i could do the same with my GSR. We've measured the engine bay and it could possibly fit an EA81 transmission, but if i got an earlier 5speed 1600 transmission, which are quite readily available, all i'd need to do is change the bell housing? ive heard that if i put my lumpy 1400 cam in a 1600 and change the 1600 heads to the 1400 twin port, i'd get higher output.. could anyone clarify this? because in that case i wouldnt need to change my exhaust headers...

Subaru doesn't have much left in body panels I don't think - and the prices if they did would be pretty high I would think. You afraid of bondo? Sounds like it's not in bad shape - a few dents could be fixed without much trouble. Only reason I can see for new body panels is if the old panel would cost more to fix than buying another. Or if you have a parts car with plenty of good ones like I do :lol:

oh nah, the car itself is very tidy.. i was just interested in knowing if it were possible to pick up old panels.. the are not necesary but could prove handy. I have a couple of contacts with access to parts cars so that is good.. infact we just swapped a guy a GFT coupe for a GSR coupe, both wrecked beyond reconstruction but also both containing valuable spares for the specific models. ive read in books that over there in the U.S a model of the GSR came out in 5speed, it was still a 1400, we didnt get them over here, id love to try and track down a 1400 5speed transmission.

If what Noah says is correct, maybe an older 1700 5 spd would work - if the bellhousings are the same for the older 1700 and your 1400, then quite possibly it might go together. I'm sure there would be some interesting clutch bits that need swapping around, but that can be done.

im quite sure the EA71 1600 have the same bell housing as the EA63, but i think the drive spline falls short of the engine, so i think the bell housing needs to be shaved down a few mm. I'd love to be able to have an EA71 engine and transmission sitting in front of me so i could sort out some way around it all. Do u know if the electronics in the engine bay are any different when converting from an EA63 to an EA71?

which heads dos your car have? the dual ports or the single ports? the duals come out the sides front and the back of the head and the singles are just like normal subaru heads there may be more room for a valve job on the duals or singles i dont know. also you can over boor them (the block) some what. did you say you had a dual carb setup? i have a manifold but the spare motor isnt hear yet, (brand new in box) i to would love to see this GSR, that is one car that i would love to have along with alot of people. how about R2 SS did you get those in NZ? anyway grate going on the cars love to see the pix.

oh yea did you get tailgate wagons there?

yea the GSR is a dual port and we have bored it out to the next size, upgrading it from 1361 to somewhere around 1425cc.Yea i've got a dual carb set-up, thats standard for the GSR. i dont think we did get the R2 ss, and no we didnt get the tailgate wagons, i would love one! i want to get some pics on here soon as possible but i dont realy know how to do it, i know that im meant to transfer them from a website but my pics arnt on any website.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/ohwell.gif ALT=":\">

I might have an instrument cluster for sale - i think its from one of these but cant be sure - it was cut and shut into my Datsun 1600 / 510
