May 17, 200520 yr My '97 Outback (97,000 miles) has apparently worn out the rear diff- clunking in turns- I think it's a limited slip. I replaced the gear lube and friction additive, but that didn't do it. The dealer wants over $900 to fix it. Has anyone done this repair? Am I crazy to attempt it? I've worked on the drive train on my Jeep, but the Subaru AWD system is quite a bit more complex- OK, intimidating.
May 17, 200520 yr rear diff = super simple in most soobs that i've seen. a couple bolts and the things come down. axles slide off using a punch for the rear axle pins. knock those two pins out and a couple mounting bolts and a couple driveshaft bolts and put in a new one. i'd price some used ones. the newer roos might be slightly different, but it won't be hard.
