I have an 85 4x4 Turbo wagon with a bad auto tranny. Can I convert it to a 5 d/r 4x4 tranny. Need to fix car and sell it.

 

Or is it possible to rebuild the auto tranny myself or is that to much to do???

Yes you can. But you need to make sure the 5speed tranny is from another Turbo EA82. You will need to replace the peddle's cause you have to install a clutch pedle and cable.

The trans does not HAVE to be from a turbo EA82. It just makes the job a little simpler. If you get ANY trans from a nonturbo to do this job, you'll have to change the rear differential along with the tranny. That's the only extra work required for a nonturbo.

 

Since the car is an automatic, the axles will mate up to any nonturbo transmission.

 

If you get a manual transmission out of a turbo car, you'll need to replace the front axles but not the rear differential.

Well said Trogdor. If your fixing it to sell it, try to find a EA82 with an auto that is newer. Say 87 or something. And find one thats in the yard from a wreck.
