Torque Binding

Featured Replies

What causes torque binding in automatic AWD transmissions? how can it be prevented? I have heard that a power flush of the transmission sometimes helps stop the binding. Most importantly, when I buy my next used Subaru, how can I find out during the test drive if the transmission is bad. I am looking to buy a car now and I don't want to make the same mistake as I did with the last one!!

Use the search function for "torque binding" and you'll see a TON of info on the subject.

If you suspect it in a test drive car, a grabbing feeling in a tight turn (like while parking) and it's an automatic, you can try putting a fuse in the FWD holder under the hood to see if it will stop. If it stops it's a problem. This isn't the only diagnosis, there are other symptoms that aren't always apparent while driving. Some test need all the wheels off the ground.

Good luck with your car hunt!
