Converting from auto to manual tranny.

Featured Replies

Im am getting real frustrated with this tranny problem I keep having. This is my third transmission with in the past two years. The one I have now has a delay and it feels like it is slipping just in first and sec gear when apply lots of gas. I was just wondering if it would be worth the time or money to convert to a manual and how much work would it involve. Or money. How many hours from a mechanic?

Have you read my swap info?

wow that is crazy. Lots of work. And how long have you been a mechanic. lol. You know lots. Im impressed. Im just a first year automotive tech. student. I read a part in the journal about the ecu for a 1992 being the same for AT/MT. Would that mean I wouldn't have to touch my wiring, since mine is a 1992 w/turbo? And would that be a lot less work for a swap? And what about axles and rear diff? Is the tranny still the same length. I noticed you upgraded a lot of other parts. If I am just swapping tranny's is there any other parts that I would have to swap?. Thanks for all the info.:)

I'd like to tack on a question here. Legacy777, did you have to deal with ABS? The ABS controller is a different part number for MT and AT. I was wondering what, if any, compatibility there is between the two. Also why would ABS care what flavor transmission you have?

Guess it would help if I typed the correct url ;)

Actually I'm more or less a backyard mechanic....I'm an engineer by day :)

All the turbo legacies had the same ECU, so no you wouldn't have to swap ECU's. You will however have to deal with the same/similar wiring issues as I did. ie the neutral switch, at/mt identifier pin, reverse lights, shift lock, and cruise control. You'll probably also have to deal with abs as well.

If you pickup a turbo legacy transmission, you won't have to deal with the rear diff or anything. You will still need a manual tranny drive line, transmission, trans crossmember, and other goodies. You'll basically need everything I did minus the rear suspension, rear diff, suspension, ECU, & gas tank.

No I didn't deal with ABS. With my experience on the cruise control computer, I'd say you'd probably have to swap computers.......however I haven't looked at the wiring to see how everything is wired up. I know the newer models have issues when people have done swaps, but I know ours are less complicated, so there may not be as big an issue.
