1987 GL 1.8L Water Pump Blew

Featured Replies

Hello folks,

I'm taking a crash course in replacing the water pump on my Subaru. I have most of the plastic around the timing belts off, and have decided to just cut the plastic guard (side nearest the passenger) rather than try to crank off the shaft to get to the final 2 "hidden" bolts on the water pump.

My question is, now that I've done this terrible cutting thing, what will happen? (i.e. what to watch for - like the belts coming off or getting mud-clogged!) I only paid a thousand for the car, and they wanted to charge me $500 for one part! I figured for what I paid, I couldn't mess it up that bad! But then got to wondering what I've done...hmmm...

Thanks for your input (or direction to a link if this has been discussed already).

i run coverless on my belts, all the covers are gone except the one behind under the water pump as this is the only place the belts are exposed from the back side. never had a problem with debris although one time i left a loose rag under the hood and it snapped the belts when it wrapped around the crank pulley. but then again it only took me 10 minutes to replace both belts

go ahead and remove whetever other plastic you wish. your future maintenance will appreciate it:)

There are a number of people running with no belt covers. the general concensus is that as long as you don't do any major offroading, you'll be ok.

I am running with no covers right now and so far so good.

the sedan with the 7 on the hood, the light blue wagon, and the wagon with the orange stripe are all running open belts. never a failure yet!
