June 28, 200520 yr Anyone ever tried to adapt these http://www.arizonadrivelines.com/Drive_shaft_high_angle_and_long_splines.htm to a subie? I imagane you would have to weld the axle shaft to the CV and use the slip shaft design to allow for the change in turn center, or perhaps modify the front knuckles by moveing the Balljoint hole and strut mount. but that should work, oh and you would need 2 jionts per axle, so not cheap
June 28, 200520 yr Looks sorta like what I was thinking of doing with Datsun axles. Main problem seems to be with heat treat and welds.
June 28, 200520 yr Those are all driveshafts; not axle shafts. There is a company that makes extreeme angle axle shafts with very tough CV joints. These companies can surely make what is needed for a Subaru but nobody want's to pay for what they are worth. We'd prolly have full 6" suspension lift kits by now for Subaru platforms; but people whine about paying $400 for a simple 3" body lift. People pay thousands of dollars for suspension lift kits on other vehicles and that's why they have aftermarket support.
June 28, 200520 yr I belive it was these guys that was metnioned before in another thread http://www.drivetechnologies.com/page18.html Ya just found it; here's the old USMB thread about it... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=34761&highlight=drivetechnologies So who's up for spending some seriouse $ ?
June 28, 200520 yr Author Part of that comes from people not wanting to put that much money into a car they only paid a couple hundred bucks for. I was just thinking that it would be cool to have the first rock crawling 'Prezza not many off road 'prezzas, but I would if I had a properly equiped ride, it's stock now, but the shocks are shot, so I was thinking while I was in there, I may as well see what I can do to make it more capable off road.

I'd say lift it, put bigger tires on it, then actually bust up CVs on the trail. Then let us know what would be the best way to implement some heavy duty custom CV joints. I think youll notice you want low gear reduction before you blow any axle assemblies.
June 28, 200520 yr Author A little MS paint for ya. *edit* yeah, the gearing is an issue, I am thinking either a divorced atlas Tcase or a D/R conversion. though mine is an auto so it would be nice to keep that for off road.
June 28, 200520 yr Author really what we're talkin about at this poitn it would be easier to just do a full custom suspension, maybe with Hummer H1 geared hubs?
June 28, 200520 yr Author heh, on a slightly related note http://www.truckworld.com/trail-trucks/02-gremillion_shark/02-gremillion_shark.html
June 28, 200520 yr That Land Shark is a very VERY tricked out. Maybe after my son has gruaduated I'll be in a position to spend that kind of money
June 29, 200520 yr Looks like a regular old Double Cardan joint. Can be found on the front of many Jeeps, esp. Cherokees. Go to the local J/Y, snag a few front drive shafts from Cherokees, break out the welder and tell us how they do as axles on a Sube.
June 29, 200520 yr The inboard mounted brakes are kinda trick. Makes engineering the IFS a lot simpler that way. Sure would be fun to toss money at a project like this.
