July 19, 200520 yr Having difficulty removing the cam sprockets on the '97 Outback wagon with 2.5 DOHC. Especially those on the drivers side where they're recessed in the sprocket. Any ideas on this one?
July 19, 200520 yr Author Can't get the bolts loose. I think I might have to reinstall the belt to get the bolts to break loose.
July 19, 200520 yr Others have used a strap wrench to hold the sprocket. Or you can take the valve covers off and put a wrench on the flats of the cams.
July 21, 200619 yr I second this method, but be aware that you may need to replace the valve cover gaskets and spark plug tube seals if you do. They're not supposed to be reusable. Mine were off once and not replaced and now leak a bit, especially now that I'm running synthetic.
July 21, 200619 yr With the Valve cover off you can access the cams. There is a spot on the cam shaft designed to put a wrench on it and hold the cam in place. Keith
