problem with/EA81. 4 sp D/R 4wd shifter

Featured Replies

Did an engine swap yesterday, EA81 to EA81.

Ran great when I was done.

Here's the problem.

1) Car won't drive. Tranny in 2wd just spins w/o engaging the front wheels. In 4wd Hi it grinds. In 4wd Lo it grind really loudly. Sometimes if I shut the engine off, the car would lurch forward in 4wd Lo and then pop out.

Called Will Smith and he recommended that I check into the 4WD shifter linkage. We had a bit of trouble getting the engine back in and we jacked up the tranny w/o removing the 4WD lever.

Has this happened to anyone else. Also what is a fis for this w/o having to drop the tranny and put in a new linkage bars.

i'd suggest checking / adjusting the 4wd shifter linkage, also check it to see if you bent it.. if its bent or out of adjustment it won't engage into 2h,4h or 4L. it kinda sits between gears and grinds.. just as you said yours is doing

i've swapped many ea81's , 2's, and ej engines and never had a problem like that.

Pull off the interior trim around the shifters. The 4WD/hi-low lever is mounted to a bracket with slotted mount holes. Check for anything that is obviously bent, and if not, try adjusting the position of the lever bracket using the slotted holes.

(This is all from memory, and it is still early in my day, so I hope that my memory isn't all scrambled.)

Never learned to like coffee, and the caffeine does not "wake me up"...
