August 31, 200520 yr Anyone here have any experience with aftermarket wheels? I'm specifically wondering how the quality and safety of cheaper aftermarket wheels compare to factory alloy wheels. The vehicle in question is actually my non-Subaru other car, the wheels of which need to be replaced due to chronic tire leaking. (Figured you wouldn't mind since y'all love cars here. ) I need to get new ones immediately but I just can't swing $275 a pop for factory rims, so I'm looking to go as cheap as I can and still be family-car safe-- Hence, something like Discount Tire's MB Motoring series. Any input would be greatly appreciated!
August 31, 200520 yr There has to be a way to seal those rims from the inside. The air is going the right way to seal from the inside. Have you considered painting the inside with something like a latex material, epoxy, etc.? When I needed a set of winter wheels, I looked for the WRX guys going to +1 or +2 rims and bought used. Does this other manufacturer have forum boards where you could find similar deals with others upgrading? Jack

I haven't tried sealing the rims at all since I really don't have access to them, nor the means to remove tire from wheel. Nor the means to refill the tires when finished...

September 1, 200520 yr You can get steel wheels for about $40 a piece if budget is an issue. And then slap a set of hubcaps on them. Or you can get aftermarket alloy wheels also. I've never had any trouble with aftermarket wheels (alloy or steel). Many of the OEM's actually manufacture "aftermarket" wheels. If you want a whole new set of alloys, take a look at tirerack.com. If you call them up, they can give you prices for regular steel wheels for your application as well.
