a friend is looking to buy a 97 legacy l (2.2) wagon w/ 108k miles on it. was wondering if anyone had anything good/bad to say about the car. just trying to see if there are any major mechanical issues common to that year car. what im looking for is problems like the head gasket issue with my last car a 99 2.5 legacy wagon. thanks in advance for any help.

I've got a 97 Legacy L (2.2) with 128K and I love it. No mechanical problems whatever. I've changed timing belts at 60K intervals, changed water pump at last belt change, and run Mobile 1. It had one recall (alternator) that dealer took care of (Courtesy Subaru in Rapid City---EXCELLENT service!!!). No rust (it stays outside 24/7) even during SD winters. Average gas mileage (I track it with a spreadsheet) of 26mpg.
