replacing low beam bulb of headlight on 2001 Legacy Outback Wagon

Featured Replies

The driver's side low beam on my newly acquired 2001 Subaru Legacy Outback is out. I have the H1St (Sylvania) bulb, but have no idea on how to get at the old one to replace it. Does the front light assembly have to come off? Or can one get at the bulb from between the battery and the rear housing?

thanks in advance

did both on mine awhile ago, If I remember correctly, the inner assy twists off. Something like 1/4 turn etc. The there is a retaining clip that holds the bulb in. Just have to remember which way it goes in. Very easy once you've done it.

Funny story... I went to Advance Auto Parts to get a replacement bulb, and the KID behind the counter told me that I have one of those "dealer only" headlights, looks to spend about $100 bucks... Called my buddy @ NAPA, he's said he has it on sale today only for $4.99/ea... (HAHAHAHA)

REMEMBER, don't touch the bulb, otherwise you'll be doing it again much sooner...

If it is anything like the mid 90's Legacy then the high and low are the same bulb. You pull the plug off the bulb, remove the rubber boot, unhook the clip holding it in, pull it out.

now even though i own a 94 legacy,it might be similar.if you look behind the light assm, there should be a rubber cover.first unplug the plug that goes to the light.once you removed the cover,on mine there's a spring clip(hopefully yours is the same) carefully remove the old bulb.re-assembly is just the reverse of course.take care as to not touch the new bulbs glass.

hope i was of some help.

man did i respond slowly :banghead::drunk:

Thanks for advice! I just went and did it. Not even a quarter turn and I even remembered not to touch the glass portion of the bulb.
