What are the symptoms of an engine misfire? How can I tell if it is happening in my Legacy? Is it hesitation, or a sudden power loss/gain? Is it easier to tell if the car is running or idle and will the CEL come on?

My 96 OBW threw a Check Engine Light, had it diagnosed as 4th cylinder misfire... no other symptoms. Poured some Seafoam into the gas tank & before I could have some more sucked into the intake... the CE light was out.
