September 16, 200520 yr Hi all. I finally gave in and am putting my '92 Legacy to rest at 250K. I may keep it on the road a bit longer if I can get someone to fix the seatbelt (lap belt fraying, automatic no longer working) and ignore the rust. Anyway, I got what I thought was a reasonably good deal on a '98 Legacy L with 113K--$4300. So far it's been great. Smooth tranny, no loss of fluids, etc--and of course, the virtually indestructible 2.2. I'd like to put foglights in (anyone do this successfully on their own?) and I'm also going to put some nicer wheels on, perhaps the 5-spokes I have on my current ride.
September 16, 200520 yr Nice looking wagon, rottenhead. You're right--it would look good with 5-spoke alloys. Just be aware that it's not the "virtually indestructible 2.2" of old. They tinkered with the engine in '97 and it became an interference design, so keep an eye on the timing belt schedule.
September 16, 200520 yr Nice ride you got there. I'd find some nice alloy wheels like from a WRX for the summer and put some dedicated snows on those old steel rims.
September 16, 200520 yr Author Boooo on the timing belt change. I wasn't aware of that. I have some good Blizzaks on steel rims from my 92 that I plan to toss on in the winter.
September 17, 200520 yr Author RE Foglights. I see Teague's has the factory kit for 175. Parts America sells various stuff for 30-60. Anyone have experience either way? I'm leaning toward ponying up for the real deal... Here's another thought. I like the look of the GT, but wanted the 2.2. I have the nice wheels to put on, will put in the fogs. I don't think the cost would be prohibitive to put a spoiler and roof rack on. The only think that might be tough to pull off is the body colored moulding and side-view mirrors? I'm thinking they might just snap right on though...perhaps I could find a wrecked GT or something...
