October 5, 200520 yr I have an 87 gl 1.8 L fi. there seems to be five bolts holding the water pump in, three on the top that are only connecting the waterpump and two on the bottom, one holding the timing belt cover and another I belive the crank case cover as well as the water pump. Do I have to take the covers off the timing belt and crank case or will the water pump slide out once the two bottom screws are unattached.
October 5, 200520 yr Author I am seeing now that this is a bigger job than I thought is to be, I would be greatly helped by a general step by step. Am I going to have to drain the oil and pull the crank cover, that is what I dreading mostly. Thanks from a poor bastard who cant afford a mechanic, luckily this is kind of fun.
October 5, 200520 yr Shouldnt need to pull the crank cover, just the radiator, fan and the timing belt covers. Consider changing the timing belts while you're down there.
October 5, 200520 yr one of the bolts for the water pump will be behind the cover. if you look on the replacement pump you will see where the timing cover threads into, that will give you an idea pf what's behind there you can get away with taking a chunk off the corner of the timing belt covetr to expose the bolt. to break the crank bolt loose use a pry bar and butt it against the driver side(u.s.) and crank the motor with the coil wire unplugged if you go through all the trouble you could take all the covers off http://www.economysuperstar.com/milesfox/subaru/service/service.htm
October 5, 200520 yr Author That is good news, But I can't get that one screw off that is being blocked by the crank case, Do I even need to get it off? And if I do can I take the belt "holder disk" off, I couldn;t figure out how. thank you
October 5, 200520 yr Author If I use the engine to get the bolt off, how will I get it back on, cuz the engine only turns one way
October 5, 200520 yr Author Thank for the help, the pump will be all finished tomarrow, can't wait to drive that shet
October 5, 200520 yr If I use the engine to get the bolt off, how will I get it back on, cuz the engine only turns one way Put the car in 5th gear with the parking brake on and torque it to 75 ft-lbs (or just really freaking tight...they are known to come loose.)
