Legacy Suspension upgrade

Featured Replies

Car: 1999 Legacy L Sedan MT

hey, I have a question hoping I can get some options presented.

My Legacy is just about to hit its 100k birthday and I want to spoil it by upgrading the suspension.

Issue is I want the least bit of drop I can get. I have already found out that i can use KYB AGX's for my struts but spring selection has presented some problems. H&R and Whiteline control springs are out because they will drop the car too much for my liking.

I say this becuase I do some offroad gravel events put on by the local clubs and I do not want my car any closer to the ground than it aready is. i was told prodrive springs would be a good choice but wanted to see if you guys could offer some addition advice.

Rear sway bar and endlinks I've been told I should not really exceed 17mm by guys in my raly club but another subaru guru I talked to last night mentioned maybe doing a 19mm since the earlier legacy turbo had those.

Endlinks I was looking at whitelines but wouldn't mind any other suggestions.

If you are on a budget I suggest you get a 1996-1999 Outback rear sway bar, they are 18mm compared to the L 14mm. I don't think you would need to upgrade your springs, the struts should improve the handling. But if you do want the added stiffness of the springs look around Nasioc http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/search.php?searchid=2966190 There is a lot more info on the performance side of things there. Just remember to search over there since most questions have already been asked. Come back here for the rally & off road stuff.

I don't do any sort of offroading, but I added Hairpin Racing endlinks in the rear of my 97 OB. (I also added a Whiteline anti-sway bar.) The Hairpin endlinks are a nice beefy Aluminun and they employ a spherical ball pivot joint. No squeaks or noise from them at all, which was my main concern. Price was good too.

Just my 2 cents.

Dampers/shocks will not reduce roll and pitch very much, but only slow it down. This will of course make the car easier to control. Lower, stiffer springs will give a more direct feel to the steering and maybe balance the front/rear better for less understeer.

I would suggest sticking with the stock springs since you need the ride height. AGX's and an alignment with a bit more camber up front will work wonders for the handling.

Stock camber is 0.0 front and -1.0 rear. If you adjust the front camber to -0.5 you should find that understeer is a thing of the past. (But be careful under braking, the tail will become a little more lively.)

Works for me ;-)

I should have noted that I had already adjusted ,my camber to what you suggested....in my case I did it more to offset the fact my front tire sidewalls were getting worn bair at the stock settings once I adjusted it I noticed the car sticking much better than it was at stock. Can't wait to see what better tires do for me.

Using stock springs are looking better for funds as I look further down the road...but I am still unsure. I did find eibach ones for $349 US Ouch! but those are no drops but stiffer.

I'm thinking myself that if i want to get the full benifit of the upgrade I am going to have to ditch the stock springs but I also would liek to do my rear sway bar and endlinks so I suppose I will have to pick what ones I want more unless I want to drop near a grand after changing all the parts and getting new tires to replace my worn ones on top of an alignment.

Lucky me I can install all this myself and jsut pay a guy for the alignment ^^

Any other suggestions?
