Question #1 Smog Pump?

Hey guys,

I'm new to Subaru. I picked-up my first last spring for the great price of $0! It sat in a field for two years 'cause the cam seal on the drivers side shrunk and popped out that's about all. I replaced all the seals and put new belts on and ran it for around 6,000 miles so far. It uses a quart of oil every 3,000 miles and the oil is always clean at changing time (3,000 mi). I've fixed a few minor leaks valve covers and water hoses. It's a carbed '87 GL 4wd with dual range tranny (EA82). The body has 310,000 miles (no rust) and the engine must have less?

The 1st question:

What is that thing on the passenger side of the engine (not the EGR) that the exhaust goes to and then dumps into the air filter and how do you troubleshoot it? I have fixed the exhaust and it leaks nowhere, that thing makes so much noise dumping into the air filter it sounds like it has one. What is this thing and is it supposed make so much noise?

It's the ASV, or air suction valve, system. It's supposed to allow air to be sucked into the exhaust to help the cat burn excess fuel better. Take it apart, and there will be some reed valves in there. If yours is making a lot of noise, the valves are probably broken, stuck, or otherwise damaged.

Thanks, I'm all over that. It doesn't suck, it blows exhaust into the air-filter area. If I find broken reeds are those available or is it a throw away?

Depending on how clean your engine runs, you may not need it. If that's the case, you can block it off really easily. Just unbolt the two bolts that hold the tube to the head (next to the exhaust port) and center a nickel in the port. Tighten it up and you're done.

This was not entirely correct. after further inspection it does suck. I sucks real loud. Bypassing it doesn't help. I'll leave this alone seems to be doing what it's 'posed to....
