"read memory" location

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I need some help reading stored codes off of my ECM.

I have an 86 GL wagon, carbed, and the ECS light comes on virtually every time I drive for more than about 10-15 minutes. Sometimes it comes on and stays on for the duration of the drive. Sometimes it comes on and goes off again. And, my personal favorite, sometimes it goes on and off with changes in throttle position. I did a search and read all of the information here on the site about reading codes and I think I have a fair idea of how it works.

So far, all I've been able to get the light to flash is a 73, which my Haynes manual tells me is a model designation, California 86 4wd etc. The green (test mode?) connectors are right there at the ECM but I don't know where the read memory connectors are, or what they look like.

In one post I found searching (I can't remember which thread, sorry) it said that you are in test mode if your fuel pump cycles and some solenoid under the hood clicks away when you turn the car to "ON". Well, mine does that but the green connectors are unconnected.... so maybe they are the read memory connectors and I can't find the test mode ones??

The other connectors may be white or black under the hood on the firewall.

The fuel pump should cycle on and off once for about two seconds when you turn the ignition on. This is normal.
