Newbie and questions - 93 legacy AT 4WD non-T

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. This board is a great resource, thanks to all that contribute.

I have a non-turbo 1993 legacy wagon with an auto tranny. 136,000 miles. Recently, when turning corners and accelerating I have noticed that the transmission seems to hesitate and then shifts into lower gear with a lot of force. Kind of throws me back in the seat, like its slamming into gear. At the end of this month, I'm planning on a 4,000 mile road trip, and I'm not sure if the transmission issue should affect my decision to go. Assuming I can go, what sorts of things will I want to do preventive maintence on before embarking on my trip? I've only owned the car about a year. I'm OK with a wrench, but I'm no mechanic. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Welcome.

I'd suggest changing the transmission fluid as starters. If you don't know the condition of the parts on the car, do a routine tune up, plugs, wires, air filter, pcv valve, fuel filter, etc.

Check your brake fluid and coolant levels as well, pressure in the spare tire, as well as your main tires.

You may also want to check out www.bbs.legacycentral.org too.

Legacy, thanks for the reply. I tried the old "change the tranny fluid", having it flushed about 5k ago, no noticable difference. I fear the worst (tranny rebuild) but thought maybe it could be something much more simple (bad mount, computer glitch, etc.). Perhaps taking it to a tranny shop would be in order?

Thanks again,

Jordan

You want NGK BKR6E-11 plugs

They should be pre-gapped, however it's always a good idea to check.

As for wires....NGK makes good wires.
