sources for phase I engine

Featured Replies

Can anyone recommend a source for a replacement 2.5L DOHC phase I engine? I called CCR Engines, but I'm afraid that those costs are just out of my budget, even though it would be the best solution. Where can I find an engine that I can have a fair degree of faith in it that it won't have any big problems? I've never had this kind of situation and don't know exactly what to do to have some peace of mind without breaking the bank.

Thanks.

Any Phase I engine that you pick up used is going to be questionable, unless it has been properly rebuilt. Even if you do pick up a good low mileage engine, you should probably put head gaskets and the related stuff in it. That will probably put you up to the $1000 - $1500 range.

I have had good luck with junkyard engines, but the Phase I is an engine that I wouldn't trust coming from a junkyard, or anywhere but a reputable rebuilder for that matter.

Have you considered doing the '95 EJ22 swap? I wouldn't consider it with an auto trans, but with a manual it has enough oomph.

There are usually a few JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) EJ25's on eBay. These are engines that are imported from Japan. Whether or not the JDM option is a good idea, I don't know...I've heard that the JDM engines do not have the capability for OBDII scanning and wiring may be a hassle. Anyway, it's an option. I think they tend to go for around $1200 with pretty low mileage.

You could also check car-part.com. There seems to be a decent selection of suby engines available, although nowhere near new.

Then there's the option of replacing with an EJ22 2.2L, which is reputed by some to be Subaru's most reliable engine. You will need to make sure you find one with dual port exhaust, however. The swap is apparently very easy.
