i have 2 that are out of the car. is their any way to test them to see if they work.

What year, as the resistance will be different depending on model.

 

For an Ea-82 the resistance should be...

 

 

14F 7-11.5 k Ohms

68F 2-3 K ohms

122F 700-1000 Ohms

 

 

Basically, the hotter it gets, the less the resistance should be.

If you have access to the same info for a 96 OBW, could I impose upon you to post that as well. I think I may have a minor problem that the cold temp sensor may be the issue. Thanks.

Like Noah said, you have to heat up the coolant temperature sensor while measuring the resistance across its terminals with a multimeter. I'd recommend you throw the sensor in the freezer, measure the resistance, then move it to a pot of water on the stove.

I don't have the specs on your engine's coolant temperature sensor, but as long as the resistance varies with temperature, it's probably still good.

Don't have for the OBW, but those specs should be very close

 

Its the same basic sensor, as the temp increases the resistance should go down.

 

32F approx 3Kohm

68F 2.5 K ohm

176F 1.25-1.5 K ohm

That's right, the failure mode of those sensors can be intermittent. If there's a trouble code, replace. Cam, temp. and knock sensors that I replaced all showed a correct resistance reading.
