The CEL finally came back on this weekend so I rushed off to AutoZONE and they checked the code things, it was a P1101 so they recommended a new gas cap, and all is well -so far.

The 'dead spot' or whatever that was hasn't happened since the weekend I posted about it, so I guess I'll just wait and see what happens.

Thanks for everyone's input, this is a good board!

Just always be sure you twist it on 'til you hear several clicks.

Yup! Always have since I had my 89 Justy and the CEL light came on a month after I bought it and I took it into the dealer and they told me allll about that. I felt stupid but hey, I'd only driven a crummy mid-80s Ford Escort prior and that thing never ran long enough to have a CEL light come on. :D

missed the subject header there, yea it did need a new gas cap cuz when the CEL first started coming on, I made extra sure I was tightening it to several clicks (always have but paid extra attention) and when we looked at it closely yesterday, the seal was kinda cruddy and chunky-like, proly dried out or something, I dunno... but so far it's been off and stayed off -same thing happened to my justy around 100K miles, the CEL was ALWAYS on and finally just spent the $5 on a new gas cap and that solved it. I see a trend here :brow:
