Broke the Clutch Free!

Featured Replies

Broke the clutch free on the GL. First day in a long time where it wasn't slimy out and I had some free time. Took it out on the street, pushed and held the clutch pedal in, and mashed on the gas a few times, it broke free, but it slips bad when engaging in 1st gear. My dad said that would be from all the rust and would be like that for a little while.

I was told when I first got it, that the clutch slipped a little. Hopefully it will last a little while longer before it gives out.

The list of things to do yet before it is roadable:

New Master Cylinder

Plugs

Wires

Cap and Rotor

Tires

Oil Change.

I got my '87 GL wagon about 5000 miles ago with a slipping clutch. Today, it is still getting me to and from work even though it is weak. I'm trying to decide if I should have a clutch shop do it for a little over $200 more than parts or limp along until I have time to do it myself and save money as well as have the opportunity to clean up the engine and do a few other engine maintenace things like oil pump, water pump and fixing oil leaks. At any rate the clutch should keep limping you along for a bit longer if you go easy. Tracy

Yeah, I think that's what I'm going to do, I just want it for good gas mileage between work. I'll use my Crown Vic for the heavy duty traveling. I've never dealt with a slipping clutch before, but my dad has numerous times, so he's given me some tips.

adjust the clutch cable and see if that helps
