I've had my 87 dl wagon 1.8 FI 4x4 for about 2 years now with no major problems, man I love this car.

 

so I've had a check engine light on for quite a long time now and was hoping to get to the end of it. I read about the self diagnostic here on the forum, but can't find any connectors or any LED under my dash.

 

I did find two green connectors under the hood which looked like they might be of some diagnostic use but ??????.

 

I also am about to purchase some tires and was wondering what sizes you guys could reccomend for me. the 165r13's are a little pricey and I would like to find an alternative that would work well.

You found the right connectors. Along side the windshield wiper motor there is a green connector and a white connector that should both be unplugged.

 

Plug in the white one. Now take the kick panel off under the steering column (one that the fuse box axxs panel is in). Look directly under the steering shaft (where the panel you just removed is) The computer will be flashing a red light in the center of the ECU. It will flash long and short flashes. Long Long Long Short Short Short Short would be code 34. The longs are 10's and the shorts are 1's.

 

Post the codes and I will interpret them for ya.

 

Tires, you want 185/75/13R tires. They are the subaru "standard" tires for the GL and Loyale wagons.

 

Get them at Sam's club. Summer tires will be about 30 to 40 bucks a tire

185/70 -13 is what you want. 185/75 probably won't fit under the hood in the spare tire holder, although they will fit the wheels fine. 185/70 is just about the same outer diameter as the 165/80-13's. They are a lot commoner these days than the 165/80, although both are getting harder to find.

 

I can't hardly find 165/80-13's at ANY price, let alone a bad one! If available, they will be cheaper than a 185/70 of the same model of tire.

 

There seems to be a lot of different stock tire sizes out there. My '93 Loyale wagon came with 165/80-13's, according to the manual, door jamb, etc.

I haven't pulled my codes yet, but had anther quick question about tires. so 185/75/13R, 185/70/r13 will work, but will 175\70\r13's? I have a chance to pick up some 175\70\r13's that are almost new for super cheap.

 

any ideas?
