misledxcracker
Long one here, sorry!! Well, I drove the GL to work today (20 miles) and was... well, quiet enough. After work, I get in, start 'er up, and I mean, the car sounded terrible, like a sewing machine with a disposition! So... I buy some Rislone, the blue stuff, I'm a quart or so low, so I throw it in there, and drive it around 40 miles...gave it a hardcore Italian special (3AT tranny going 90 works, right? ) Still making that horrible noise! I look under the car, I'm leaking somewhere that's dropping it onto the oil filter and that area, about 6 different places it's dripping... The exhaust, I believe it's the cat, is smoking, I'm guessing from the oil thats leaking being blown back there by the wind? AND... big problem! I'm leaking somewhere on the flywheel housing! Like, a crack somewhere on the flywheel housing leaking some sort of oil... Damn it. So I drove her back home, ticking like mad, got pulled over by a cop and was asked "why the heck is that thing so loud?!".... and now here at home I am. Now... heres the low-down: - I get around 45 PSI oil.p at cold startup idle, and it wont even hit 45 when warm, even going a steady 75 on the 3AT, and we all know those things rev high. I get around maybe 5-6 PSI per 1,000 rpm's, if my math skills are working.. - The tick... It goes away, say when I'm doing 50, cruising, it'll die down somewhat, then dang, loud again... It sounds like a sewing machine mixed with someone tapping their fingernails on a metal table... - The flywheel housing leak... It just started, after I pulled an Italian on it tonight. It's not a horrible leak, but what the heck would cause it to leak?? It's in the "crack" of the housing, in the middle I guess you could say. And it's dark fluid... not transmission fluid at all. I'm taking a wild stab at it and I think it's the oil pump seals going south... Because it did quiet down quite a bit after my oil change, then started the tick with the leak near where, I believe the pump is. And it 'freakin shoots oil all over the place under that hood! Can we try to figure this one out... long road trip planned! -Gary

idosubaru
i'm not that familiar with 86 models, is that an EA81 or EA82? and by flywheel, you're saying it's leaking where the motor and trans mate together? the oil pump is on the other side...front of the motor on an EA82 so i dont' think a leak at the flywheel would be oil pump related. i would guess rear main seal but i'll wait 'til i find out if this is EA82 or EA81 before saying anything else. bgd73
I had those noises too, see if oil pan is loose, valve covers, even intake and change oil and filter and let idle till fan kicks on . Once lash adjusters lose "prime" they take awhile to gain gently. idle should get it, or easy steady low rpm. unless you are ea81 (i am assuming it is 86 carbed ea82). Mine made those noises after simple changes .... Like I was bending the whole engine into something else . My last ea82 could not even be 1 quarter of 1 quart low or the valve noise came back! misledxcracker
ea82, fuel injected... and yes, where the motor and trans meet, there's what seems to be a crack in the metal, allowing oil to come out of the SIDE of the housing, not the bottom. its dripping from the front of the engine, if it were the rear main, wouldnt it leak out the back on the bottom?
