Head Gaskets

Featured Replies

I own a 1997 Legacy Outback 2.5 liter with 96K miles. I have never had a problem with the cooling system or the head gaskets.

My son-in-law owns a similar 96 Outback and is selling his because several mechanics etc. have told him to dump it before it costs him a lot of money in repairs. They say the 1996 - 1999 2.5 engine has severe porblems with head gaskets. I love my outback and want to keep it. Should I be worried?

i wouldn't worry about it. it is more common than other subaru head gaskets, but not gauranteed to happen to yours. there is no way to say "yes it will" or "no it won't". the good news is that you know about, so if you start seeing signs then you need to worry and think of what actions you want to take. if you're attentive the car won't leave you stranded at least.
