HELP ME PLEASE I think timing belt shredded

Recommended Posts

I was sitting at the light and all the sudden it started making the most crazy noise it sounded like my gears were grinding but I was in neutral. Then I turned the car off it started back up noise still there I tried to go throught the light I made it through the light the noise was gone then it came back and the car died and now it wont start the starter works so and I know its not a small problem I think it was a seized bearing or timing belt shredded. Please let me know what you guys think.

My car is a 87 RX ea82t

chances are the driver side timing belt stripped some teeth, or otherwise broke.

here's a quick test:

Take off the distributor cap, and have a friend crank it over briefly. If the rotor does not spin, either a) the screw holding it place came out, or B) your drivers side timing belt is stripped/broken (most likely)

If the rotor doesn't spin, you'll just have to replace the timing belts. The engine is non-interferance, so no worries about bent valves.

I think it was a seized bearing or timing belt shredded.

If the bearings in the idler went out, I'm sure they would make a grinding noise (I've never heard it, but I can imagine) and it would shred the belt up, so that sounds possible.

The timing belts are actually pretty easy with some patience and good instructions (and all the help you can get here.) I would do the rotor check and then go from there. If that is what happened, you can get a kit with the tensioners and idler in it so you don't have it happen again, and you can leave the front covers off for easy belt access!

i've seen seized timing pulley bearings on number of occassions. in those cases none made noises, but i imagine they could as i never drove them until they failed or tore the belt up. replace your belts and pulleys and you're probably golden. good time to replace the water pump and oil pump seals too, and cam seals. it's all right there once the belts are removed.

there are a number of on-line vendors mentioned on this site. use the search function to find out more. Subiegal (jamie) is one, Toney is another though i can't recall their contact info. do a search you can't miss.
