nekedmooz
Hello fellow subaru people! I have a 1987 Subaru XT GL and the craziest thing keeps happening. I am not sure what to do. Its possible I am doing something wrong. To make a long story short, I have replaced the timing belts on my EA82 and for some reason the crank shaft has been stripping the inner and outer timing crank sprockets. At first look (when I changed the belts, after one snapped) the inner sprocket was stripped on the inner circumference about half way around. For whatever reason ( the crank pulley bolt was torqued to spec ) the crank shaft key (chuck key thing) stripped away the inner part of the inner sprocket. So i thought hmm, perhaps I can get some grade 8 dowel pins and stick them in the holes of the two sprockets to syncipate them. Well this worked great, for about 2 days. Now my vehicle is dead on the side of the road in a neighboring city. For whatever reason the timing crank sprockets keep stripping. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. The engine is in otherwise great shape. What could be some of the reasons the crank shaft would strip the inner (mostly) and outer timing crank sprockets? Can someone point me to a reference that I can take a look at to determine the exact way these two gears go on the crankshaft? There was finite metal shavings everywhere in my engine. It literally acted like a drill and stripped the markers all to nothing. Is is possible I a missing a part (bought car 6 months ago), perhaps a washer or something? Can someone point me to a picture of this on their EA82? Perhaps some book or manual that shows how these gears go on? Has anyone else had this problem? I am in dire straights here with this thing. I am tempted to push it off a cliff!! Thanks!
idosubaru
did you install new crankshaft sprockets and peg them in place? i'd install new sprockets and make sure they are pegged to the crank. a seized cam would seem to just cause the timing belts to skip a tooth, but might want to make sure they both turn over fine and aren't stressing the belt/crank too much. seems like the sprockets don't want to turn with the crank.
