'90 Legacy TPS and Online Parts

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

I have a 1990 Legacy and the Throttle Position Sensor is on its last legs.

Can anyone recomend one of the online subaru parts vendors that you have had good dealings with?

thanks in advance

Cheers

Andrew

I'd recommend www.subarugenuineparts.com

However I'd also recommend you post in the WTB forum as there are probably other members that have used ones for substantially less money then what it's going to cost you new.

Also, how do you know your TPS sensor is on its last legs? What symptoms are you experiencing?

Thanks for the reply,

With regard to it being on its last legs its based on a couple of things.

I checked it a while ago per the instructions on your website (still my most handy reference..thankyou :)...at the time i didnt find anything particularly wrong...However.

The check engine light keeps giving code 42...which is idle circuit and from what i understand is part of the TPS in the 90. On certain throttle settings the car gives really eratic behaviour...revs falling away then the car surges...Its quite uncomfortable and causes the cruise control troubles as well..

Before buying a TPS i was going to check the TPS again per the instructions...

Hopefully you may have some other areas to investigate :)

thanks

I visited a few 'pick-a-part' wreckers in my area and managed to find a '93 Legacy with an EJ22 like mine. A few of the sensors are small enough to put in your pocket, while the ones that are too large are certainly cheaper than laying out good $$$ for new ones. There are certainly no guarantees that the sensor will work, but the wreckers I visited had a 30 day return policy.

The main thing to check/adjust is the idle switch. If that's set properly, and you continue to get the code, and have those issues, then yes, I'd probably agree that swapping out to a new/another TPS would be a good idea.
