my brat needs help

Featured Replies

okay so my 1981 brat has some crazy electrical stuff going on. The car starts with no problems and then will run for about ten minutes or usually far enough from my house that I have to call AAA to tow it back to the garage. Then after ten minutes it just dies. No sputtering or anything, it just dies like it had been shut off. At that point it can not be restarted, it turns over fine but doesnt take. But if you wait about an hour it will start right back up. After it died one time I tested the wire from the coil to the distributor and there was no spark so I replaced the coil but that did not fix the problem. So at this point I am pulling my hair out and I just want to drive my brat again. So what do you all think?

My guess would be that you have a bad ignition module. When they start to go bad, they will run for a wile until they get hot then they will crap out on you until they cool off. A way I found to check this is to watch the Tach when you try to start the engine. If the ignition module is working, you should be able to see the tach needle bounce a little when the engine is cranking.

Yeah, does sound like the module. With some distributors it's caused by a bad connection between the module and the distributor body as the distributor acts as a heatsink. I don't know if this is the case with these modules but it's worth a try, it might just be a case of cleaning it up and bolting it back down.
