I have a 2000 outback with a 2.5L

What do I need to do a belt replacement besides the following:

1 timing belt

1 tensioner

1 water pump

1 oil pump oring

1 toothed idler

2 smooth idlers

Thanks

Well Jeff, I did mine in October and found everything to be in good condition when I opened it up at 105,000 miles, even the belt looked new!

I did change the belt though and the water pump and t-stat. I reused all pulleys and tensioner. I would not replace pulleys and tensioner unless their condition is questionable. By that I mean loose or wobbly or not smooth in rotation. If they are good to go it will save lots of bucks!! 5000 miles later I am happy with the job I did.

Cam seals, front crank seal, valve cover gaskets, spark plug gaskets, and the buttons to seal the bolts that hold the valve covers on. Replacing the seals when replacing the timing belt is a very good practice, as old seals and gaskets will tend to not seal properly, allowing for leaks. Take the money that you save by not replacing perfectly good idlers, and invest some of it in new seals. You will be glad you did.

Yup, you need seals, and four hours unless you're like me, if so then you need eight hours.

And antifreeze, and the coolant system magic anti-leak treatment additive which is $2 at the dealer. And distilled water for mixing.

And maybe some loctite.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I will shop for the parts and get a belt, seals, and water pump. It will probably be a few more weeks before I start this project. Some folks need 4 hours, some need 8, I need two days since I am the type to lay everything out in meticulous order and clean everything. Take digital photographs. Sit and look at it for a while. Then put it all back together. :)

Jeff

You really going to change the tensioner and all three idlers? That will certainly make a good job of it, but might not be necessary. How much do those four parts cost? Wait, I can look that up...
