My Engine Is Broke!

Featured Replies

yes indeed it's true.. my engine is broken... it all started happening about 5 days ago... i started it up and it ran like poo... after closer inspection i notice that hey, cylinder 3 isn't doing anything...

well after the obvious and most simple test to see if it's getting spark... alas it did have spark...

so i went and bought myself a compression tester... hmmm... ya... results...

cylinder1: 105psi

cylinder2: 125psi

cylinder4: 125psi

and cylinder3??? 0psi!!! DO'H!!!

so i desided to go for the gusto... lets take the heads off!

and this is what i discoverd...

this is the head side of cylinder #3... look at the valve...

and now look at the piston...

what you all think?

Bad times - so do you have any clue as to what might have caused this series of unfortunate events? Looks like you have a communist gnome making weapons out of your piston there.....

That sucks i was hopeing to see the brat at wcss .

Clattery lifters can hammer the seats loose, over heating can cause that too .

Is it a 1600 or 1800 ? do you have a replacment head? if not i should have some around some ware 1600 or 1800 .

i wouldnt worry about the piston just make sure the ring lands are ok not pinching the rings and get a new headgasket and a new head good to go :)

hey thanks for the help rguyver!

it's a 1600 and i don't have any spare heads laying around...

i'm still debating it in my head... i'm thinking i should just screw this old engine and get my ej22 conversion going... i have most of the parts already... (i just need an adaptor plate/flywheel and something for the front axles...)

and of course the inevitable odds and ends...

i need to rebuild my ej22 though... HG...

dunno if i should bother fixing it... any thoughts?

well if i can find a good used head (not sure how much $ but cheep ) it will only cost you a headgasket and you will at least have a running brat till you get all the EJ parts ready .

hmmm only if you were a little bit closer...

i was debating it and i was thinking of just putting on a different head just so i can go to the show... then when i get home drive it for a bit possibly then buy a different car and turn the brat into a project car...

until the ej conversion is done... then it becomes the daily again...

since i'd be already nabbing a head off you mind if i get an egr pipe and one of the short intake manifold bolts?

i snapped one... and i twisted the egr pipe... i was reafing on it then think, "wow this thing is stiff........ ohhhhh...."

i ended up cutting the pipe off since it was so twisted to be usable anymore anyway...

perhaps we could come up with some little pre meet before going down to the show? wanna caravan with me??? perhaps come down here a day earlier and help me out? i have a nice guest bedroom...

would have to clear it with the parents... interested???:)

Im going down through the Osoyoos / Orville border Xing and a trip to Van would add 5h on my trip but thanks for the offer . Ill have to go to my friends house whare i store some of my subaru stuff to see if i have a head thats off the engine and a EGR pipe, i could bring it to the show? im trying to leave thursday but it will prob. be friday , im taking the my brat .
