Stop starter disablement?

Featured Replies

I have now bought a 98 Legacy Sedan to go with my 96 and 99 Legacy Wagons!

I have seen short references to the following problem in the list but -

This 98 has an irritating alarm which disables the starter unless you 'subtract the first number you thought of and stand on your head'.

Is there a permanent way to stop it doing this please - as an amateur sorry I would need a blow-by-blow account?

I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to do (only deal with the starter disablement, or the alarm in general), or if you even have the remote unit(s). Perhaps the following link is useful; go to the 1995-2000 Code Alarm System section: http://www.cars101.com/subaru/keyless.html

EDIT: If all you want to do is prevent the starter from being disabled, you may be able to just replace the starter interrupt relay with a jumper plug. But if that's what you're after, may I ask why? Many people ignore car alarms, but it's hard for a thief to make off with a car that won't start.

Alarm units in those years were supplied by CodeAlarm. On the circuit board under the cover, there should be several switches that change settings. With those, you can't competely disable the starter interrupt but can change it to manual arming.

Thank you for your advice - What I want to do please is stop the starter from being disabled, so I can use the spare key without a remote control. My daughter needs the remote, but I need to start the car with the spare key to service it.

The remote has 2 buttons on it and the left one is always needed to enable the starter. If all the doors are locked and then I use the spare key to unlock the driver's door the car will not start, unless I fetch the remote and press its left-hand button.

The remote is labelled 'Pursuit'.

Why not try to get another remote transmitter? A Google search turned up: http://www.autotechs.com/subcat46.htm . They have a toll-free number, so maybe a call will determine if you can easily get another remote. (I've never done business with them, so can't say how good or bad they may be.)

EDIT: Here's another http://www.remotesunlimited.com/

By the way, Code-Alarm is an Audiovox company, and Pursuit is one of their many brands .
