81SubieGL
so today, I picked up a 93 Loyale with 170k miles on it with a BHG. while the motor is out (i bought the car with the motor out) what else should i do to the motor? Im already resealing the whole motor, new water pump, and new timing belt kit (most likely a new clutch too). also, are there any performance modifications i can do to this motor?? (I have a 1990 Supra Turbo w/ a GT35/r turbo, so I always have to ask these things ) are there any coils recommended, and are turbo swaps easier on this than an ea81? im assuming i need the whole MPFI getup for that, but does the turbo mani and turbo bolt right on? does intake or exhaust make any difference on these motors?? sorry for all the newb questions, just wanna get a good start. thanks again! 81SubieGL
yeah ive searched a bunch (3 days straight!). all im sure of right now is that i wanna get a D/R tranny, and build my own lift kit (my dad can get me metal for free, so thats handy). daeron
well, there are some EGR things that can be removed if emissions testing isnt a factor.... but the best performance mod for the engine is to swap in a EJ22 out of an early legacy... 140hp NA. alternately, you could find a turbo EA82 car to yank the engine, intake, ECU, etc etc etc out of and get yourself up to like 120hp... but unfortunately, the heads are all essentially the same, you already have the highest compression pistons that fit, swapping to MPFI is pointless unless your doing turbo as well, and if youre going to swap something in, the simple answer is the EJ. I mean, ANYTHING might help.. hotter ignition, different cam grind, open up the intake and port match it, etc etc (insert your standard engine tooning bits here) but how much help will it make? probably not that much. sorry to burst yer bubble.... 81SubieGL
thanks for the reply daeron. a few questions though about the EJ22: 1. where is a good place to get an EJ22 motor from? 2. will my tranny (or the D/R tranny Im trying to aquire) bolt right up to it, or do I need some sort of adapter plate? 3. what cars specifically can I get an EJ22 out of? 4. what else do I need other than the EJ22 motor, I know I will need the ecu, wiring harness, MAF/AFM. 5. finally, how much should i be paying for a EJ22 swap? sorry for all the questions, and thanks again for the help
NorthWet
The MPFI/Turbo heads are different from the other EA82 engines: They have dual intake ports per head. Turbo swap is involved. EJ22 swap is more involved, but the result is more satisfying and bulletproof. Your tranny will not directly bolt to an EJ22 without an adapter plate. The EJ22 was used in the Legacy, and pre-96 are easier due to simpler electronic control (ODB-I vs. ODB-II). daeron
yah, northwet hit em all. i dont know specifics on the EJ parts as far as models to source from.. i know it needs the adaptor plate for the EA trans, and i know it makes a lot more sense if you can get a donor car to have EVERYTHING for the EJ you could need rather than trip after trip to the junkyard, and that damnable junkyard cashier in particular. what i know, I read here. it was in passing, as I am in no position to do a swap right now, nor in the predictable future. keep the eyes peeled, or if you wanna be more proactive about it, use the search function. I really hate saying that to so many posts, because it IS frustrating to hear.. but its true, it IS your friend :-p
