Does anyone know whether the ECU detects the MAF sensor type? I have the older flapper door sensor and considered swapping it for a newer hot-wire sensor because of the mounting face (circular v. square). Since they are different, would the sensor then be ECU specific, or could I run either with my original ECU?

you can not swap sensor types. yours must stay flapper style and hot wire style must stay that.

The two sensor types are completely different. They would not be compatible.

If it makes any difference, I talked to a guy once who said he and a friend swapped the flapper for the hotwire once, also changing ECU's.

I have no idea how easy it would be though.

There's too many difference between the older and newer systems to just swap the ECU and MAF. You'd also have to swap disty, TPS, wiring, and quite a few other things. There's a list somewhere of the differences between the two systems.
