EJ22 timing belt - how different from EA82?

Featured Replies

Well my timing belt skipped a tooth on the passenger side cam yesterday while doing some snow drifting. At least I think so. It runs like rump roast and if you pull the plug wires on the passenger side it doesn't really run much different.

Anyways, Miles Fox has agreed to do my timing belt. He's an EA82 guy, so other than the fact that there's one belt instead of two, what's different in the procedure? I run sans timing covers so it should be an easy job once we get it figured out.

The water pump is driven off of the T-Belt. There is a hydraulic tensioner that can be tricky. Unbolt it when you take off the belt. to reinstall, You'll have to use a vise or C-clamp to compress it. There is a small hole in it. Put a small allen through the hole to hold it compressed. install it and the belt on engine, then pull the allen wrench out to release the tensioners piston. Other than that, all other normal timing belt stuff applies: check tensioners, idlers, WP, etc.. just line all the notches up at the top, and ussually the belt has marks on it that will line up with the marks on pulleys as well.

actually, i have done a leganus timing belt once before, fired up on the first try, this was the only time i have done one.

anyway i dont remember the lignment procedure as t was somewhat complicated printout from the internet.

i know i wrote the book on timing belts for ea82, but where is a diagram for the 2.2?

we were smart to leave the covers open for easy access, it seems t me the passenger cam slipped whilst donuting the TRUCK STOP!:Flame:

the intake makes ill farting noises the more you open the throttle, as if the compression is flying past open intake valves.

the car seems to idle fine as far as its running off the drivers side cylinder bank just fine.:burnout:

Just line up all three pulleys with their respective marks and you're golden. None of this turning the engine 360 degrees like the EA82. The marks are also much easier to see on the EJ22 (that darn driver's side mark on the EA82 is always such a pain if you're doing it with the engine installed.)

Be careful not to compress the tensioner too fast. Supposedly you can destroy it if you compress it really quickly.
