so.. specs: 96 legacy LS no tweeter kit, came with a tape deck/AM/FM now has a CD head unit (that's nothing special, it's been installed for about 3 years with no problems)

 

my rear speakers blew out. all sorts of cracking and snapping with any base that a song or a DJ's voice may have, so i've been running everything through the front 2 speakers.. and "what's his name's" Law has taken affect and the reaction of pushing everything through the front 2 speakers is having an equal and opposite reaction and now the fron 2 are starting to go.

 

now, i don't want anything special, basically just replacement speakers. a set of 4 would be nice, the 2 in the rear and the 2 in the front.

 

does anyone know what i should be looking for? size? brand? is there a compatability issue i need to worry about, or are speakers all the same when it comes to wiring (aside from humongus ones that need an amplifier)?

Edit::Fronts are 5 1/4 in either iirc, 6.5's will fit with a little work to the mounting craddle.

Probably the CD player was too much juice for the stock speakers.

 

Here's a link to the 2007 Scosche fitment guide, just look in the Subaru section, it'll tell ya what size speakers will fit.

Funny - my 96 Legacy sedan's rear speakers just completely blew 2 months ago. Speakers back there take a lot of abuse from heat and sunlight.

 

This followed several months of a new Pioneer CD player that I am sure over-drove the stock speakers.

 

I replaced them with some freebie "Dual" speakers I got with the stereo at Best Buy. They needed an extra hole drilled into them to fit the factory screw holes, but otherwise were a quick and cheap replacement for the blown rears. They aren't polys, but new cones beat blown cones.

 

I expect the door speakers need to be replaced soon as well. I hate cutting factory metal, so I try to stay with stock sized speakers.

 

Oh, and the stock tweeters are not a massive improvement - but I will say this.....you'd miss them if you already had them. You might have to investigate the crossover settings and gain if you run another amp.
