Hello All!

 

I have a mechanic here who obtained a 98 Legacy GT with a 2.5 Dual Cam. The bottom end is knock so it needs to come out. We have here a great shape 2005 Outback 2.5 bottom end. What we need to know is if the 05 bottom end will accept the trans and heads from the 98 2.5 LGT..... any help is greatly appreciated!

Yes, they should. Wiring will probably be a little weird, but it'll fit.

Transmission, yes. I don't think you can put the 98 heads on the 05 block though. You would probably need a complete longblock and computer/wiring to have an 05 motor in there. Something about crank and cams being different. I am interested to know if you do try how it runs. Thanks.

he wants to use just the 05 bottom end and use all the 98 wiring/heads etc.... ive been hearing things that the cams and and crank are different... but will that really affect anything?

will have the eight bolt tranny mount and the 98

will have the four bolt set up.

That doesn't matter. the 8 bolt pattern will bolt on the 4 bolt tranny still.. but it's the heads thing that worries me. Isn't the 05 SOHC and the 98 DOHC? That would totally ruin the computer controlled timing.. and you would have a hard time having the correct crank/cam sprockets, etc.

many people, including me, are running an EJ22 SOHC

in an Outback that came with the EJ25 DOHC

 

We don't change the ECU and there is no messing with the cam/crank sensors.

It plugs in and plays.

 

Maybe the 05 is different but with the 98 heads the

cam sensor will be the same.

This is something that might be worth talking to ccr about. I know that depending on what phase the motor is, and whether it is California emissions or not, changes the crank/cam pulley because they have a different set of "timing" teeth on them for the sensors. I don't know if the ACTUAL crank and cams are different or compatabile. I would say if everything lines up (coolant passages, oil passages, bolt holes, gaskets, etc) then go ahead and put it together with the crank and cam gears, timing belt, etc. that belong to the computer and sensors that are going with it. And then let us know how it turns out!

 

Edit: Just so we are clear here, you are talking about using an '05 SHORT BLOCK (no heads, cams, timings, or anything) and then putting all of the 98 heads and cams and accessories on it, right?
