Rx ticking

Featured Replies

My 89 rx is ticking like a mother ****er. It comes and goes but when it comes its getting progressingly louder. This tick speeds up with the rpm. I dont know what to do about this. I dont think its a valve tick since the heads were rebuilt about a year and a half ago.

heads can be rebuilt, but if you have a bad (worn) oil pump the lifters will still tick because they are hydraulic (need oil pressure to function properly)

this is a common problem with all EA82 series engines. the oil pump o-rings become worn, this allows air to enter the oil steam, causeing the lifters to tick.. they will tick faster and sometimes harder the higher you rev the engine..

this is not known to cause major damage to anything, but would REALLY be advised to fix.. oil pumps are fairly easy to replace.. they are right on teh front of the engine down low (oil filter screws onto it) you should be able to see the bolts that hold it on.. its pretty straight forward..

there are others that can explain the hole procedure better than I

well that makes me feel alot better. What measures do i have to take to replace this. will i need to replace the pick up screen? do i need to remove the oil pan?

well no to both of those questions..

the oil pump is an external pump , its mounted on the front of the engine.. i've never taken one off myself, so i can't go into much detail.. i know the oil filter screws onto it, and its about 6" long by 4" wide.. and i know the o-rings on it go bad like i posted above.. I've heard of some folks just gettin the o-ring kit from napa for like $6 and replacin teh o-rings, boltin it back on and whala fixed.. or ya can get new pumps for somewhere around $45..

free bump.. hope someone else here pipes up on the procedure...
