86 gl 3at spfi water loss prob

Featured Replies

just got done doin the HGs. no cant find where the water is goin.

is this a cracked head or what? its got this tiny crack lookin thing on all four cylinder heads. would this cause the water loss? also one of the intake manifold bolts broke so we used tube of gasket crap lol to redo the gasket for better seal. didnt know if this might have broke through and is leaking?

First off, those little cracks are fine. They are in nearly 100% of all ea82s driving right now. 99.9% of the time they are not deep enough to leak water.

The intake has a coolant crossover in it. Do you have grey smoke? If so you are burning coolant and I bet it's coming from the intake. If you just installed it with 2 bolts then surely it will leak.

Other thing to check is the condition of allcoolant hoses. The ones going to the heater core and the throttle body are nearly the highest points in the system, so they rarely leak water, they leak steam when warm, and it evaporates so you never see the leak. Look for signs of steem from any of the clamps and check the undersides of the heater hoses real well for signs of wetness

Even if it is just a hose and not the intake, don't leave the intake with only 2 bolts in it. It is certain to leak soon. Take the manifold back of and extract the broken bolt, retap or helicoil as needed.

If there was smoke, check the exhaust ports- I bought an 88 GL Wagon, thought it was blown headgaskets, had the heads checked and it was cracked around the exhaust bowl area. It didn't misfire, just smoked bad.

That is "the classic EA82 BTV crack." (between the valves) it happens, you are probably fine.

However, your intake manifold needs to be torqued down to factory specs (cant recall right now, something like 17-20 pounds) by all three bolts, gradually, using a subaru brand gasket (dry is perfectly fine) or else you will have problems sooner or later. My guess is its happening now.

You need to get that broken bolt out, and either drill out the bolt and save the original threads, or just overdrill and helicoil the threads, and then reinstall your manifold with a new set of OEM gaskets or you will lose water.

I may be wrong, but I doubt it. I don't typically make statements this adamant unless the case presented is one of the "typical" ones and this has intake gasket written all over it.

This ussually doesn't happen to the non turbo models. Unless they get severly overheated. And this is a different crack he's reffering to than the BTV ones in you're picture
