My car recently started to shut off while idling. When you start the car, it will start, and after a few seconds die down. It will stay running if you give gas to compensate. Also when driving, it sometimes dies when you put it in neutral.

 

NOTE: It was doing the same thing this past winter, but it eventually went away...

Code 5 is a model designation(MT/49 State)

If it's flashing that to you then it means you have no active trouble codes.

 

I'm thinking you're problem may be you're neutral switch on the trans. If the ECU doesn't know the car is in neutral it will shut off fuel when it see's a fully closed throttle. It does this to save fuel while coasting, say down a big hill or something, where the moivement of the vehicle would keep the engine rpms up(in gear). And as soon as you open the throttle a bit a gain the fuel comes back.

 

It is located on the drivers side, rear of transmission. Search "neutral switch" and you may get more info on it. I don't remember if it's supposed to close the circuit or open it to signal *neutral*. But if you find that out it will be easy to test. Just put it in Neutral and test for continuity across the poles of the switch.

Having a little trouble finding the neutral switch on my tranny. Is it viewable from the top down, or should I get underneath the car? Any color/wire info?

It's not visible from top, not easily anyhow. It is located on the rear, drivers side of the trans. There are 2 switches back there. One is the backup light, one is the neutral switch. The neutral switch is higher up and further towards the back, right under and a bit behind a little cylindrical protrusion that's about 2 inches in diameter(that's the reverve lockout assembly)

 

Wires are Yellow/blue and Black/red

 

Black/red wire is ground. Yellow blue wire is signal wire, connected to pin 4 of the ECU.

Oops, FWD. it's close to there, but actually further back, in the side of the extension that protrudes out the back. The cone looking piece that points upward slightly. It's the furthest rearward thing on the trans with wires. same colors.

 

Switch is closed (continuity between terminals) when in neutral, and open in all other positions.

The IAC valve is probably dirty, or the solenoid is non functional. On the front of the throttle body, there's a solenoid bolted to a valve. Take the hose off the top of the valve, and spray some carb cleaner down it in an effort to clean it out.

 

My 88 Wagon did the same thing, and I had to replace the solenoid with a junkyard one. That cured it.
