What changed between 96 and 97 2.5L

Featured Replies

So interestingly, the 1996 2.5L makes 155 HP and asks for premium gas.

The 1997 makes 10 more horsepower but no longer asks for high octane.

Does anybody know the specifics of what changed? Was there a compression change in 97? head change? engine management?

Went from hydraulic lifters to solid in '97. There may have been a piston change too, but not sure. If there was, it certainly wasn't anything radical. Otherwise, they're identical as far as the engines themselves are concerned.

ccrinc, could there be an emission/cat issue that was overcome using premium fuel? I mean, exhaust blockage requiring more bang?
