Sluggish Loyale at TDC

Recommended Posts

90 Loyale, 1.8, non-turbo

Just finished getting the engine back in from a gasket set job.

I have her timed at TDC and she seems sluggish.

Could it run better at BTDC or better ATDC?

Note: all plugs/wires/cap/rotor are new.

I have a noisy lifter (noisier than what it was before I yanked the engine) but I'm replacing the four on that side tomorrow.

to set the timing:

Make sure the idle is set right, warm the engine up, turn it off, plug in the green connectors, (ignore any clicking or CEL) and shoot for the center mark on the flywheel (marked at 20* BTDC)

You should be set at an inital timing of 20* BEFORE top dead center; this is the middle of the timing hash marks on the flywheel.

However, something tells me that you are NOT set AT top dead center, because the air/fuel mixture would be detonating WAY before spark almost every stroke...

Top right corner of the screen. USRM== Ultimate Subaru Repair Manual. I am fairly certain that somewhere in there (possibly only in miles fox's timing belt write up) there is a procedure for setting the timing; if not:

The timing light tells me I'm TDC right now.

Don't get me wrong, she runs 'okay', but it seems when I go to 'start off' she needs a little more assistance/gas than what I'm used to giving her.

I'll play around with different timing hacks and see what she gives me.

Don't play around, set it right.(there is an actual spec for this, no need to guess and *hack*) Set the timing to 20 degrees BTDC like it suppossed to be. Not at TDC. 20 degrees, with the green connectors plugged in.

Well I timed her out at 20 BTDC, worked like a charmer, thanks.

Just to be sure, I timed her with the green plugs connected, then once I timed it I unplugged them. That right?

After this test drive though (in hopes of getting a lifter to fill-up) I noticed the left cam must be leaking into/under the belt cover. I gotta check the lifters anyway do I'll dig into her (again) once she cools off. I think I forgot to change-out the smaller of the two o-rings on that cam. DOH. Nobody's perfect. Extra parts/gaskets is a difficult pill to swallow!

Well I got the new lifters in and of course I had to re-time it due to the cam/belt removal.

This time I put a white-out "T" on the 20 BTDC mark on the flywheel so I wouldn't make the same mistake twice.

Thanks again, she is purring like a kitten now (well, the right side is knocking but I'll give the seafoam a chance to work its magic).
