2 ?'s b4 pulling pin on T belt tensioner

Featured Replies

1--I have a 96 OB 2.5 dual OH cam. It has the piston style T belt tensioner with 2 bolts. My question is, why are the holes in the tensioner slotted??? Nothing tells me to back up to the engine framework b4 tightening bolts or pushing it it as far towards the T belt as it will go. Nothing in Haynes mentions this nor in Skips write-up

2--this is not related. the cam casings have the two 1/2 moon cut outs that the platics inserts are to be bonded into. Should I install these when I install the valve covers (at same time) or bond them in the day before (hold them in place with some tape maybe?)

thanks guys

Bill

Slide the tensioner all the way to the right (Your right, as you're standing in front of the engine),tighten the bolts, and put the belt on, once the belt is on, loosen the bolts, slide the tensioner all the way to the left and tighten the bolts. Then pull the grenade pin. :-)

thanks HS. I do have that article, it's a good one. But interestingly that article says nothing about installing the tensioner either left or right. Where did you come by that information about pushing completely left?

FSM does tell to push the tensioner to the left, by prying with a screwdriver against the bracket, before final tightening.

Anyone want to comment on the question re: the plastic 1/2 moon inserts?

they should be already bonded into the head casing.did you remove them? if there still on the head casing, leave them.

They were removed when the heads were done (by the machine shop). My local "stealer" wanted like $10 a piece. I ordered them from the west coast

Put sealant on the round edge, mount them, dab a little on the flat edge and then install the Valve Cover promptly so the VC will hold them in place and they wont shift. Id let the engine sit overnight so they cure a little before starting it too.
