Is there a Subaru of America site that contains all the recall info for all the cars? I happened to be on a dealer site and saw a recall for my car and the symptoms were the same as I have been having. I just took that car in to the dealer and $1300 later, I see this recall. I just had it in last week and they never mentioned the recall. Where can I see all the recalls?

 

Oh, they said I needed a new knock sensor and new cats. Car is a 2000 with 120,000 miles and regular dealer-based maintenance. Sickening and now this new twist.

there is a difference between tsb's (technical service bulletins) and recalls. i think there may have been a tsb describing you problem, but not an official recall.

 

to find government mandated recalls:

the are recalls that the government is requiring due to safety flaws.

 

to find the mechanical recalls and all other recalls for your particular car, you can register with the my subaru website:

my.subaru.com

 

but more than likely there was just a tsb out on the problem, which tells the techs how to fix the problem, but not to do it for free. if in fact there was a recall, and you paid, you should be able to write subaru of america, plead you case, and they should reimburse you if the dealer won't.

FYI Here is text from e-mail I rec'd yesterday when I asked Subaru what recalls applied to 2000 Legacy GT (sedan):

 

"I noticed that our computer system reflects two open recalls. They are 1)WWP99 ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM CONDITIONER & 2)WXV79 ENGINE CONTROL MODULE.

Here is some brief background regarding these campaigns.

1)Subaru of America,Inc. (SOA) has determined that over time, affected vehicles may develop small external coolant seepage from one of the engine cylinder head gaskets. This is the result of normal expansion and contraction of engine components caused by the heating and cooling of these parts. To prevent cylinder head gasket leaks from developing or to correct an existing leak, a special Subaru Engine Cooling System Conditioner should be added to the vehicle cooling system.

This Service Program affects most vehicles from the 1999 through the 2002 model years. As this program affects many vehicles, we are staging the distribution of these letters starting with the 1999 model year vehicles. Because of the large amount of affected vehicles, we are asking later model year vehicle owners to wait till they receive the official notices.

However, if you are experiencing any problems related to this situation, please

contact your local Subaru dealer to schedule an appointment. If not, we would ask you to wait until you have received your letter, which should ensure that there is enough inventory of the conditioner on-hand at the dealership for those vehicles experiencing this condition.

2)Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA) has determined that affected vehicles, may

experience a broken wire on an integrated circuit within the ECM. Should this

occur prior to replacement, the CHECK ENGINE warning light / Malfunction

Indicator Lamp (MIL) will illuminate steadily while the engine is running

advising the driver of a malfunction and the need to seek repair service."

I just replaced the knock sensor in my wifes Outback. The dealer wanted over $100 for just the part. I got it from

for about $60.00 delivered. It only took about 1/2 hour to put on. The hardest part is finding out where the little bugger is.
