February 3, 200818 yr how does the ECU account for engines with EGR and engines without? 95, 96, and 97 EJ22's could have it either way. How come the non-EGR EJ22's don't give a CEL? Does that mean the ECU's are different? The junkyards don't differentiate 1995 ECU's...but auto's have EGR and manual trans do not. Does that mean they are interchangeable? I know they would run fine...but would it give a CEL or how does it work? i'm wondering if i swap engines from EGR to non-EGR if i can get rid of the CEL by just swapping the ECU?

Gary, I'm just speculating here, based on information from other brand cars, but I would guess that the Automatic ECU has some extra data lines to communicate with the trans computer (TCU.) Many manual ECUs have a pin which goes to the clutch switch, so the engine idles down slowly during gearchanges. I'd be a bit surprised if they were plug-and-play compatable, but I suspect the only way you're going to know is to ask someone who has actually tried it. The only other possibilities (assuming the ECU is actually the same) is that the software in the ECUs is different (egr vs. non egr) or that the wiring harness jumpers a couple of pins together to enable/ disable egr sensing depending on what vehicle it's installed in. You could compare wiring diagrams.... Also, if you have a contact at one of the Subaru wholesale places, you could ask for the part numbers for a manual ECU and and automatic ECU to see if they're the same. Nathan
February 3, 200818 yr Author on older cars the manual and automatic engine ECU's are interchangeable and most of the parts look ups at junkyards don't have a manual/automatic selection for 1995 - when the auto's were EGR and manuals were not. subaru part numbers don't typically help much....they'll slap new part numbers on lots of things that are interchangeable. i'd bet they have different part numbers just based on past experiences like that, but it is worth checking.
