February 19, 200818 yr I just brought a turbo 89 subaru legacy rs for work and a week later its engine started a ticking tappet sound with the gas pedal applied can any other subaru drivers offer some advise it would be most welcomed thanks
February 19, 200818 yr More then likely you have a collapsed hydraulic valve lifter. If you haven't done so, I'd recommend replacing the oil & filter. That may help. Otherwise, assuming everything else is good, you'll need to replace the collapsed lifter
February 20, 200818 yr Woohoo another NZ'er joins the board. You appear to have the world famous Subaru 'TOD' or tick of death. Theres a million and one cures for this from adding ATF to the oil or just doing a change and flush - loads of info on this site. All i can say is if the ticking gets dramatically worse, have your oil pressure checked - dont just assume its several sticky lifters or you may end up like me...
February 21, 200818 yr well with an ej22 with 255,000 miles, we changed the oil to synthetic and held the rpms at 6000 rppm periodically during warm up, and that cured lifter tick

Has as good a chance of making things worse as better I believe... perhaps the oil and filter as 777 suggests first eh?.... Will-
