I posted a previous thread about my 2.2 and possible piston slap.

 

A few responses were to have the valves adjusted for correct lash.

 

I still wonder -- if the noise quiets down is it valves? Any engine I've had before was always the same valve noise cold or hot.

 

My mechanic looked in his book and said it calls for 7.3 hours of labor for the adjustment!

I can just imagine the bill on that being over $600?

 

Anybody had this done lately? What did it cost?

Well, I just read through the linked post. My engine has similar piston slap symptoms. Has done so since the odo read 45K miles.

 

On Saturday, I'm replacing the clutch (130K miles now) and since the engine will be lifted out anyway, I'm going to check/adjust the valve lash.

I almost never need an excuse to sit. Especially if it's a bar stool!

Additional times:

Were air conditioning interferes. .2hrs

Were power steering interferes. .2hrs

 

Face is, weather or not you have A/C or P/S, they don't interfere with a valve adjustment, so the additional time should not be added.

So what would I be looking at for a SOHC 2.2L then?

all EJ22's are SOHC, so that shouldn't affect anything.

What I was asking was the difference between a 2.5 DOHC adjustment vs. a 2.2 SOHC in time/price.

So there is a difference between the two types.

Huge difference.

 

The valve adjustment on the 2.5L can't be done in car in that time without a ~$200 special tool.

 

All that is needed for the 2.2L is a 10mm, screwdriver, and feeler gages.

Well, well, well....

 

First of all: I am appalled! My car is built in Japan, but they installed a FRENCH clutch at the factory "Valeo" stamped all over the parts. No wonder the original clutch died so early. Thank goodness the Subaru dealer spare part is an Exedy item. (Came in Subaru box, with Subaru part no.)

 

Back on track: The valve train needed no adjustment. So that's quite impressive. Of course it does mean that the my piston slap noise really is piston slap. I would expect the same of yours Suzam.
