We all of a sudden have a high pithced whine/scream from our front left wheel of our '91 Legacy wagon. I'm guessing its our wheel bearings(some missing perhaps?) Does any one have any thoughts? Our mechanic is off on Mondays, so I can't ask him. Do you think its safe to drive it for 2 more days or so until we can get it to the shop? Thanks!

May want to check the brake pads also. You never know.

Yep, sounds like the wear indicatators are rubbing against the rotor. When were the brakes last serviced? If this is in fact the case, it'll make noise until the tab breaks off. Then thinkgs will appear fine and you'll have several thousand miles until the friction material is completely gone.

 

If the rotors are still good, it's a good idea to have the pads replaced before you have metal on metal grinding.

one of the "other" keys to "worn brake pads" is that the hi pitched whine won't change pitch as speed changes and will go away when the brakes are applied hard, then come right back. that's the shrieker tab just doing its job.
