December 29, 200322 yr finally got me a newer subaru. im thinking the guy ran it out of oil, or something. but thats why i got it realy cheap. arent 2.2 supposed to be the best one out there? and how do these auto trannies hold up. i should at least get to 150k with it right?
December 29, 200322 yr Awwww that's awful. The 2.2 is a beautiful engine. I feel bad for it. Please make it happy. Yes, it is a terrific motor, despite gripes about chronic pin knock. Can't attest to the AT-- we had a 5spd. Mike
December 30, 200322 yr What's with this slew of Scoobs throwing rods lately? We always brag about how tough Subaru bottom ends are! He must have driven it dry... The EJ22 and EJ22T, IMO, are Subaru's best engines ever!
December 30, 200322 yr The auto trannies apparently give up sending power to the rear wheels are very high mileages, like over 200k. In a tight-ish bend, try to come off and on the throttle and listen for a "clonk".
December 30, 200322 yr the auto in my moms wagon is good after 185,000 miles. The center diff still works fine to all 4, or 2 wheels spin in the snow.
January 1, 200422 yr The auto transmission in my moms 1990 Legacy has over 312,000 on it, and it's never been out of the car, never been taken apart. Just regular maintenences. To make it worse, she even works for the local paper over here in Tacoma, Wa as an Area Supervisor, so she racks up the miles on that car. It's been an indestructible car for her (until the tank split on the radiator) Mike
January 2, 200422 yr I needed a second car really bad. I went searching and was going to settle on a small pickup that barly ran for 1400 dollars. I stopped by a buy here pay here lot on the way home from work to pick up my money for the truck and found the legacy wagon. It has a small dent on the rear drivers q panel. It also had a small knock...(maybe lifter?). drove it and it ran strong. So for 600 bucks i felt it was a steal. I have put new tires on it a cv joing and a ball joint. 150k miles. I changed all the fluids and drove it on the interstate about 90mph and no more tapping ever. This car was a steal and I am glad I saved it because it was not taken care of at all. Its my first subaru and I have decided when my wifes car dies I will like to buy another one. Maybe a new one. I love it.
January 2, 200422 yr Author i drive ea81s and 2 but my girlfriend keeps over heating them, and runing them low on oil and all the stuff you cant do with an older "custom" car, so hopefully with a new 60k mile motor in there, it can take the beating she can throw at it.
January 2, 200422 yr From my expierience, no subaru engine will handle being overheated. Even if it is a low miler. Is your EA82 a Turbo? Are the cooling fans on your EA81 working? Maybe we can figure out why they're overheating. Mike
January 2, 200422 yr Author no, everything is cool with my subarus, when i drive them. i have dual fans on the ea81, with a ea82 aluminum radiator. the fans are on a switch. if you forget about the switch... she also manages to flood the carb models, and break keys off in ignition switches.
January 3, 200422 yr lol, I know the feeling. my little brother likes to lock my keys in my car. So I can imagine. I assumed by your post that you were having problems, but it's all good. lol. Mike
